After launching a massive 41,000 sq. ft. office in Hyderabad, streaming giant Netflix is now preparing to enter the theatre business in India, with a special focus on the Telugu states.
The company is planning to invest in building theatres across major towns, with a particular emphasis on smaller towns. Alongside traditional film distribution, Netflix also intends to screen its own OTT original content in these theatres, creating a hybrid entertainment model that blends streaming with cinema.
The move has surprised many viewers, as Netflix has long been associated exclusively with digital streaming. Some have even joked on social media, asking whether a family of four should arrive at the theatre together—or in four separate cars, just like individual streaming accounts.
Despite the humor, the idea has sparked curiosity. Industry watchers are keen to see how Netflix’s theatre experiment unfolds and whether it can reshape the way audiences experience films in India.
