The Background
Netflix’s latest release, Made in Korea, directed by Ra Karthik, stars Priyanka Arul Mohan in the lead role. This Tamil-language film, also available in Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam, marks the first major Indo-Korean collaboration, blending the charm of K-drama with Indian storytelling.
The Story
The film follows Shenba, a young woman from Tamil Nadu who has admired South Korea since childhood. After being betrayed by her boyfriend, she unexpectedly finds herself in Seoul. The rest of the story explores her journey of independence, friendship, and self-discovery in a foreign land.
The Good
Priyanka Mohan delivers a convincing and pleasant performance, while veteran Korean actress Park Hye-jin (Kim Young-ok) shines as an elderly woman chasing her dreams. Ra Karthik’s direction is simple yet heartwarming, capturing emotions with subtlety and impact. Shenba’s resilience in tough situations and her evolving bond with “Omma” are portrayed beautifully. The theme of “where you think it ends, it begins” adds depth to the narrative.
The Bad
The plot is predictable, offering no surprises or strong twists. Shenba’s confrontation with her boyfriend lacks intensity, and the sudden focus on her friends’ music journey near the climax feels rushed and uneven.
The Worse
Logical gaps appear in the sequences where Shenba and Omma set up a restaurant. Though the pre-climax revelation about Omma’s lie adds drama, the director could have included more scenes to explain how they managed to hide the truth from her family until the end.
Takeaway
Despite its flaws, Made in Korea works as a feel-good drama thanks to Ra Karthik’s emotional storytelling, strong performances by Priyanka Mohan and Park Hye-jin, and pleasing visuals and music.
Bottom Line
A warm, emotional film that leaves you with a smile, though its predictability holds it back.
