The Background

Vishwak Sen teams up with KV Anudeep, who is known for Jathi Ratnalu, for the comedy film Funky. Kayadu Lohar plays the female lead. The film released in theatres today, so here’s our review.

The Story

Funky revolves around Komal, a film director who wastes his producer’s money and becomes the reason for the producer’s heart stroke. The producer’s daughter, Chitra, decides to complete the film. The rest of the story follows how the shooting process brings Komal and Chitra closer, and whether they eventually confess their feelings for each other.

What’s Good

The hospital scene featuring Muralidhar Goud works well. A few scenes involving Sampath Raj are also effective. Vishwak Sen and Kayadu Lohar manage to make some comic moments enjoyable.

What’s Bad

The screenplay is hardly engaging from the very first scene and never reaches the impact it aims for. Most of the comedy scenes lack proper flow and staging. They appear randomly and disappear without leaving an impression. The second half, in particular, loses direction as it progresses and ends on a weak note.

What’s Worse

The scenes involving Anudeep and his gang fail to generate humor and feel dragged without purpose. The episodes around the hero’s sister’s wedding look silly and poorly executed. The “Appaginthalu” scene, especially, feels absurd rather than funny. Many punch dialogues are too direct and forced, which kills the humor instead of enhancing it.

The Takeaway

Anudeep KV is known for blending innocence and naive humor with satire on social issues. His attempt worked wonderfully in Jathi Ratnalu, while Prince only impressed partially. With Funky, however, he struggles to deliver genuine laughs, and the characters feel lifeless.

For example, there is a scene in the second half where the hero expresses his frustration to his mother about his inability to express his vulnerable side and to live up to the societal norms. The emotions in this scene feel random and ineffective, failing to create any real impact.

Bottom Line

Good intention, poor execution.

Rating: 2/5
